  • For the past two years, a few of our Merton Sai Centre volunteers have been cooking for asylum refugee families who have been temporarily housed in the London borough of Merton during the pandemic. Many have now been rehoused in different parts of England, but there are still about 50 children and adults who are still living in single room accommodation with no cooking facilities for the past two years, whilst we have all been struggling with covid-19. Many of the families are refugees fleeing persecution from Syria and Afghanistan and also some from Eastern Europe. None of them have family or a strong support network here, except for what the volunteers from various charitable organisations and places of worship such as ours can give to them. So the Merton Sai Centre thought that it would be nice to give each of them “A Box of Love” to make sure that they don’t feel left out during this special time. We are planning to create 50 “Boxes of Love” filled with sweets and treats and little gifts for 20 children and 30 adults. As we won’t know what age or gender the children receiving the boxes will be, they will need to be toys that are suitable for boys and girls of any age. And gifts for adults would need to be likewise. If you would like to donate bags of chocolates, sweets or small gifts/toys, please bring them to the temple before Christmas Day. Or for further details, please contact Brother Jeyakara or Brother Raju.
